霍三娘为继任霍家掌门，进入一古墓中取得信物毕方扣。取得毕方扣之后，霍三娘被某神秘人绑架至某处，与九门的其他人关在了一起。破解机关后，众人一同逃出，而霍三娘的毕方扣被多人觊觎，争夺之间毕方扣落地破碎，并释放出有毒雾气。众人为逃脱雾气，躲避至一寺庙内。进入寺庙内后，发现外面的雾气迟迟不散，且有像寺庙内弥漫的趋势，同时开始有人离奇死亡，后发现死法与寺庙内一副道教壁画上的人死法相同。壁画上有9个人，死了6个，活了3个。于是剩下的人开始相互残杀。霍三娘与解家的解乃正并肩作战，直至最后虚弱的解乃正骗得霍三娘最后杀了他，让她成为生还的唯一一人…

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
