明嘉靖年间，瑜伽书生何文秀偕妻王兰英赴京赶考途径海宁遇严嵩义子恶霸张堂。张堂欲霸占王兰英，瑜伽制造冤狱陷害何文秀。官差王德帮助何文秀逃走。三年后，何文秀金榜题名，官为巡按，微服私访海宁问斩张堂。
